Guyana logistics expansion could benefit Roraima and Manaus

Guyana's economic expansion, driven by oil production, is reshaping logistics in northern Brazil. A potential cargo corridor is emerging through the border between the Brazilian state of Roraima and Guyana. The route connects the municipality of Bonfim in Roraima via the BR-401 to Lethem in Guyana, continuing toward Georgetown.

This infrastructure could serve as a vital link for transporting goods to the Manaus Industrial Pole and other regional states. Murilo Ferrari of the Brazilian Association of Soy Producers (Aprosoja) noted that Georgetown is geographically closer to Boa Vista than current major ports. Aprosoja estimates that utilizing this corridor could reduce logistical costs for Roraima by approximately 30% for both exporting production and importing agricultural inputs like fertilizers.

Full implementation of the route depends on paving specific sections in Guyana, improving Brazilian infrastructure, and establishing regulations for international freight transport. While beneficial for Roraima, the route may not be as competitive for states like Rondônia, which relies on existing fluvial structures.
