Guyana Ministry of Health extends mental health support for MV Barima survivors
The Guyana Ministry of Health is providing ongoing psychological and psychiatric support to survivors and families affected by the MV Barima tragedy. Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony stated that psychologists and psychiatrists have been dispatched to Region One to provide on-site counseling and specialized grief support.
To enhance these efforts, the ministry has partnered with the Ministries of Human Services and Education. Additionally, specialists from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) provided two weeks of specialized training to local healthcare workers and community leaders on managing grief. Support includes home visits to develop individualized care plans and the use of telepsychology and telepsychiatry services to ensure continuous assistance.
