Guyana MP demands transparency on M.V. Barima relief terms

Sherod Duncan, a Member of Parliament for the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), is demanding that the Guyanese government release the full legal terms and conditions for the HEART Initiative. This initiative, established by President Irfaan Ali, provides financial relief and psychosocial support to victims of the July 18 maritime disaster involving the M.V. Barima.

Duncan warned that without public disclosure of the official framework and eligibility criteria, grieving families might unknowingly sign documents containing indemnity clauses or liability waivers. He cautioned that these agreements could strip survivors and bereaved families of their legal right to pursue future litigation against the State or the Transport and Harbours Department for negligence. APNU is urging affected families to seek independent legal counsel before signing any state documentation.
