Guyana MV Barima ferry disaster triggers safety audit and inquiry
On July 18, 2026 the MV Barima ferry capsized about 10 nautical miles off Guyana’s coast while travelling from Georgetown to Port Kaituma. The vessel was carrying 179 people, including 18 crew members. Seventy‑three bodies have been recovered, five remain unidentified, thirty passengers are still missing and seventy‑six survivors were rescued.
President Dr Irfaan Ali responded by forming a three‑member audit team to review marine safety and compliance standards, and by issuing an Extraordinary Gazette that created an independent five‑member Commission of Inquiry chaired by Justice Godfrey Phillip Smith. The commission is tasked with investigating vessel safety, crew actions, cargo loading and regulatory oversight, and must deliver its final report within two months, with the power to refer criminal or disciplinary matters to authorities.
Parliamentarian Ganesh Mahipaul warned that the government’s delayed salvage tender – with an August 14 submission deadline and recovery not expected until late August or early September – risks loss of critical mechanical, electronic and forensic evidence from the wreck, further complicating the inquiry.
