Guyana oil boom drives record growth amid inequality and ferry safety concerns
Guyana is experiencing the world’s fastest economic growth, with a 33% increase in the first half of 2026 driven by an oil windfall estimated at $6.5 billion for the year. Despite the country being classified as high-income by the World Bank and possessing the second-highest per capita oil reserves in the world, significant social and infrastructural challenges persist.
Reports indicate that the wealth has not reached many citizens, who face rising inflation, housing shortages, and increased violent crime. In the capital, Georgetown, luxury vehicles and high-end dining contrast with raw sewage in canals and flood-prone housing. Additionally, the country is still dealing with the aftermath of a July ferry disaster that killed approximately 100 people.
In related maritime news, Guyana and Suriname are developing contingency plans for the MV Canawaima ferry service. The vessel faces potential removal from service due to safety concerns, including inadequate fire safety, radar, and hydraulic leaks. Officials are considering the MB Sandaka as a replacement vessel to maintain the route across the Corentyne River.
