Guyana Opposition Leader accuses government of political victimization
Guyana’s Opposition Leader, Azruddin Mohamed, has accused the government of political victimization following the 16-day impoundment of two vehicles assigned to his office. The vehicles have been held at the Leonora Police Station in Region Three since September 3, where they remain exposed to the elements.
Mohamed highlighted a contradiction between this action and recent guidance from Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs Anil Nandlall. Nandlall recently stated that police should issue tickets for minor traffic offenses rather than impounding vehicles or detaining motorists, warning that unlawful detention could lead to civil claims for constitutional violations.
Mohamed described the situation as an “outrageous irony,” suggesting that the Attorney General’s principles appear to apply to everyone except the opposition. He has called for an explanation regarding the impoundment and questioned whether other citizens who criticize the government are facing similar treatment.
