Azruddin Mohamed released on bail after Guyana vessel confrontation

Guyana’s Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed and MP Natasha Singh-Lewis have been released on bail following a nighttime confrontation involving security forces on the Demerara River.

Authorities from the Guyana Police Force and Coast Guard reported that they intercepted a “go-fast” vessel at high speed near Friendship, East Bank Demerara. Officials alleged the vessel failed to respond to sirens and claimed to have seen a bag thrown into the river during the pursuit. The Maritime Administration Department (MARAD) stated that neither Mohamed nor the vessel were licensed to operate in Guyana’s waters. During a search, authorities reportedly found a licensed firearm belonging to another opposition lawmaker.

Opposition members have strongly disputed the official account, claiming the vessel was already docked when police arrived and denying any high-speed chase occurred. Lawmakers have characterized the incident as political harassment and the “weaponization” of state security forces. Mohamed was released on G$100,000 bail, while Singh-Lewis was released on G$200,000 bail.
