Guyana opposition leaders to meet over commission representation dispute

Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed of the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party has invited Aubrey Norton, Chairman of A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), to a meeting to address growing fractures within Guyana’s parliamentary opposition.

The primary catalyst for the meeting is a dispute regarding opposition representation on the Local Government Commission (LGC). APNU has objected to the current nominees, which include representatives from WIN and the Forward Guyana Movement (FGM), demanding that APNU be granted at least one seat on the commission.

Beyond the LGC dispute, the proposed discussions aim to cover broader institutional issues, including representation on the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), the deployment of field scrutineers, and leadership coordination for the Region 10 Regional Democratic Council. The talks represent an effort to create a more unified front against the governing People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C), which currently holds a parliamentary majority.
