Guyana President Ali orders task force for child safety

President Irfaan Ali has directed Attorney General Anil Nandlall to coordinate a multi-agency task force to develop recommendations for improving the safety, welfare, and mental health of children in Guyana. The decision follows a consultative meeting involving the Judiciary, Parliament, law enforcement, constitutional commissions, and civil society organizations.

The proposed response aims to address various factors through public education, parental support, school-based activities, psychosocial services, and mentoring programs. Discussions also included regulating children’s exposure to social media and music, revising laws, and reviewing law enforcement and judicial approaches.

The initiative follows recent high-profile incidents, including the death of six-year-old Orlando Jaikarran. Data from the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security indicates a significant scale of concern, with approximately 4,038 child abuse cases recorded in 2024, including 1,202 cases of sexual abuse.
