Guyana President cites Qatar model for gas-driven industrialization
Guyanese President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali has identified Qatar as a highly applicable model for Guyana’s economic transformation. During an interview regarding Guyana-Qatar relations, Ali noted that Qatar’s success in utilizing natural gas to drive large-scale industrialization, manufacturing, and investments in human capital offers valuable lessons for his nation.
Ali emphasized that Guyana aims to leverage its natural gas resources to develop a downstream industry rather than simply monetizing the gas, a strategy he described as avoiding a “simplistic” or “narrow view.” By bringing gas onshore, the administration intends to create long-term opportunities for the next 50 to 60 years. Potential industries powered by this gas include an alumina plant for local bauxite processing and a large-scale urea plant.
The President highlighted that Guyana possesses a wide base of natural resources beyond gas, including freshwater, arable land, and a mining sector covering gold, bauxite, diamond, sand, and manganese. He noted synergies between the two nations, specifically how both manage the challenges and opportunities associated with small populations.
