Guyana's MV Barima ferry disaster triggers international commission of inquiry
On 18 July 2026 the 87‑year‑old state ferry MV Barima capsized off Guyana’s Essequibo Coast while sailing from Georgetown to Port Kaituma. Local authorities have arrested three crew members, including the rescued captain, on drug‑related charges after a positive marijuana test. Search and recovery efforts continue amid choppy Atlantic conditions, with assistance from French Guiana, Brazil and Trinidad and Tobago divers aiming to right the wreck and locate remaining victims.
