On 18 July 2026 the 87‑year‑old passenger ferry MV Barima capsized off Guyana’s Essequibo coast while travelling from Georgetown to Port Kaituma. Authorities estimate about 179 people were aboard; 73 bodies have been recovered, 76 survivors rescued and roughly 30 persons remain missing.

President Irfaan Ali announced the creation of a five‑member Commission of Inquiry to investigate the disaster. The commission is chaired by Justice Godfrey Phillip Smith of Belize and includes experts from Poland (Dr Andrzej Jasionowski), Jamaica (Captain Hamada Fouda), Trinidad and Tobago (Nyree Dawn Alfonso and Rear Admiral Hayden Pritchard). Its mandate covers the vessel’s loading, passenger‑boarding procedures, vessel condition, the rescue operation and any possible negligence or misconduct.

Search and recovery efforts continue, with French military divers conducting about 15 blind dives inside the wreck amid zero visibility and structural weakness. The opposition has welcomed the inquiry but urged broader consultation. A national healing body, the HEART Initiative, was also established to support victims’ families.
