Guyana prioritizes scientific research for fisheries investment
Guyana is integrating scientific and economic research into its fisheries and aquaculture investment strategy to ensure sustainable production. Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha emphasized during the Fisheries Department’s second annual Fisheries Research Symposium that research must guide investment decisions to protect fish stocks, aquatic habitats, and local livelihoods.
The government has allocated G$1.5 billion in the 2026 Budget for the continued development of the sector, focusing on infrastructure, monitoring, and aquaculture. This investment is intended to support the entire value chain, including fishers, processors, vendors, and transport providers.
Minister Mustapha noted that reliable data is essential for identifying suitable aquaculture systems, reducing production losses, and determining where capital will have the greatest impact. He also highlighted the need for accurate information on fish stocks and the socio-economic effects of production on food security, employment, and opportunities for women and youth.
