Guyana receives first group of US deportees under new migration deal

Guyana has received its first group of six non-national deportees from the United States under a newly finalized one-year migration cooperation framework. The initial cohort includes four individuals from Cuba and two from Afghanistan.

The agreement utilizes a third-country deportation mechanism known as the Assisted Voluntary Return Program. Under this temporary arrangement, individuals relocate to Guyana voluntarily while awaiting a final determination of their immigration status. Depending on the outcome, they will either return to their country of origin or relocate elsewhere. The program does not offer permanent resettlement or open-ended residency.

Foreign Secretary Robert Persaud stated that the arrivals have been fully vetted and have no criminal backgrounds, noting that the individuals are being relocated primarily due to immigration issues. U.S. Ambassador to Guyana Nicole Theriot expressed gratitude to the nation for assisting with these migration issues.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is responsible for the operational implementation, including funding and managing housing, healthcare, and social integration. The United States government will bear the full financial burden of the relocation, ensuring no financial liability for Guyana.
