Guyana to block licence renewals for unpaid traffic tickets
The Guyana Revenue Authority will soon prevent motorists with outstanding traffic tickets from renewing road licences, certificates of fitness, or driver’s licences. Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Mohabir Anil Nandlall, SC, announced the enforcement measures following data from Traffic Chief Mahendra Singh.
Statistics indicate that only 49,326 of the 88,332 tickets issued by the Guyana Police Force have been paid, leaving more than 39,000 outstanding. Nandlall emphasized that the laws must be obeyed and that unpaid tickets will face consequences.
Additionally, the Attorney General called on the Commissioner of Police and the Traffic Chief to instruct officers to issue tickets rather than detaining motorists or vehicles for offences that can be handled via citation. He noted that unlawful detention by officers could result in criminal charges or civil lawsuits.
