Guyana utility pole to remain in road construction zone until November
Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation Deodat Indar has addressed community concerns regarding a utility pole located within the Plaisance Railway Embankment Road construction zone. The pole carries a critical 69kV transmission line that supplies power to the East Coast of Demerara. Indar stated that immediate removal is not viable because decommissioning the line without an alternative route would cause widespread electricity outages in the region.
The pole will be relocated once the new East Coast backlands transmission bypass is completed, which is currently targeted for late November. This new network, designed to support both 69kV and 230kV lines, is being built across challenging wetland and marshy terrain. Construction has faced previous delays due to weather, but progress is increasing with clearer conditions.
The infrastructure project is part of a broader national grid modernization program. PowerChina is leading the construction of the 230kV and 69kV lines, while Kalpataru Projects International Limited is responsible for an additional segment of the 69kV network.
