Guyana’s National Defense Institute holds inaugural graduation
Thirteen professionals from various Guyanese security agencies have graduated from the inaugural Certificate in Defense Studies programme at the National Defense Institute (NDI).
During the graduation ceremony, Minister of Home Affairs Oneidge Walrond emphasized that Guyana’s rapid economic transformation necessitates a modernized security architecture. She noted that the country must develop the intellectual and strategic capacity to protect its sovereignty and national interests alongside its economic growth. Walrond highlighted that the NDI transitioned from a concept to a functioning institution in less than two years.
Minister Walrond urged the graduates to use their training to challenge outdated practices through a solutions-oriented approach rather than a confrontational one. She stressed the importance of interagency coordination and the need for improved decision-making in areas such as cybersecurity, intelligence, and border security to meet the demands of an increasingly complex strategic environment.
