Gwacheon to host performance marking 50 years of Jultagi heritage

Gwacheon City will host the ‘2026 Jultagi Succession Planning Performance: UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Feast, Daeryeong Gwangdae’ on September 6 at Gwacheon Central Park. The event commemorates the 50th anniversary of Jultagi, traditional Korean tightrope walking, being designated as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage in 1976.

The performance features master performer Kim Dae-gyun alongside young tightrope walkers and successors. The program includes male and female tightrope walking performances, traditional dance, and various musical elements such as Pansori and Seodo Sori. Other participating cultural assets include members of the Iri Nongak Preservation Society.

To ensure the long-term preservation of this UNESCO-listed heritage, Gwacheon City is currently working to establish a Jultagi Training and Education Center. This facility will serve as a hub for education, performances, and succession activities to maintain the tradition in its historical home.
