Gwangjin‑gu expands heat‑wave shelters to 17 sites across Seoul

Seoul’s Gwangjin‑gu district has opened 17 climate‑partner cooling shelters to help residents cope with the ongoing extreme heat. The shelters are located in everyday facilities such as a CU convenience store, five Shinhan Bank branches and eleven KT mobile‑phone outlets, providing free, air‑conditioned indoor space without requiring any purchase.

In addition, the district set up ice‑water distribution points at 15 community centers for the month of August. The stations offer chilled water to anyone seeking relief, especially vulnerable groups such as the elderly, outdoor workers and those with limited mobility. Gwangjin‑gu officials also conduct home visits for at‑risk residents, check on vulnerable populations, and operate additional heat‑reduction measures like smart shade structures and cooling fog systems.
