Gwangju advances medical school negotiations and deputy mayor appointments

Mokpo University and Suncheon University are conducting additional talks, scheduled to conclude by Oct. 10, on establishing a new medical school, university headquarters and teaching hospital. The discussions involve Gwangju Metropolitan City Mayor Min Hyung‑bae, the university presidents, local mayors and national officials, with proposals on locating the medical school in Mokpo and the university headquarters in Suncheon.

Separately, Gwangju is holding a citizen‑jury assessment to select two deputy‑mayor candidates, the first such citizen‑recommendation process in South Korea. Candidates from academia, industry, public health and local government presented their plans on jobs, AI, gender policy and other issues. The city will finalize three candidates per sector and appoint the deputy mayors later this month.
