Gwangju education sector faces budget crisis and semiconductor talent initiatives
The Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education is navigating significant financial challenges alongside new long-term industrial goals. The city is currently facing a budget crisis, with approximately 16.9 billion won in unpaid school meal subsidies for 555 schools serving over 170,000 students. Local authorities have cited financial difficulties for failing to include these funds in the year-end supplementary budget, leading to warnings from the education office regarding potential disruptions to free school meal services.
In addition to the funding shortfall, the education office has announced a strategic plan to establish a semiconductor Meister High School by March 2029. The initiative aims to build a technical talent cultivation system capable of producing 2,000 semiconductor specialists annually by 2030. This plan includes establishing specialized schools, restructuring existing vocational high school departments to meet industry demands in semiconductor equipment and processing, and expanding collaborative education with local universities and research institutes.
