Gwangju expands BRT network with three lines under national transport plan

South Korea’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport has incorporated three Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lines in Gwangju into its second‑phase comprehensive plan for 2026‑2030. The network will consist of the existing Baekun‑Maegok line and two new routes: Unam‑Gakhwa (8.4 km) and Hyocheon‑Ilgok (6 km). Together the projects are budgeted at about 1,508.5 billion KRW.

The expansion aims to link the city’s north‑south axis and dense residential districts, improving public‑transport accessibility and reducing service gaps. Gwangju’s transport bureau will roll out the lines in stages, reviewing performance, demand and feasibility before each segment proceeds. Officials, including transport bureau head Kim Young‑sun, said the plan should provide faster, more convenient travel for residents and create a cohesive BRT backbone across the metropolitan area.
