South Jeolla‑Gwangju Integrated Special City Launch Sparks Semiconductor Investment Debate

The South Jeolla‑Gwangju integrated special city was officially inaugurated on July 1, marked by a large citizen rally at Gwangju’s 5·18 Democratic Plaza and the unveiling of new deposit products to celebrate the merger. NH Nonghyup Bank introduced the “NH Jeonnam‑Gwangju Integrated Special City Co‑operation Deposit,” while Gwangju Bank launched a “Love Deposit” offering up to 3.5% annual interest, both aimed at supporting regional development.

Simultaneously, the government's plan to host major semiconductor factories by Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix in the Honam region has drawn sharp criticism from opposition parties. Lawmakers question the adequacy of power supply, water resources and industrial ecosystem, citing potential high costs and infrastructure gaps. They allege the investment decision reflects political favoritism and have called for a parliamentary investigation. The debate highlights tensions between the city’s economic ambitions and concerns over feasibility and environmental impact.
