Gwangju man arrested for killing wife during divorce litigation

A man in his 30s has been arrested for the fatal stabbing of his wife in Gwangju, South Korea. The suspect, a civil servant, allegedly targeted his wife at her residence after discovering her address through divorce litigation documents. He reportedly committed the act due to fears of unfavorable outcomes regarding alimony, property division, and child custody.

The victim had previously reported domestic violence by the suspect four times since March of last year. Despite being classified as a high-priority protection target and being issued a police-provided smartwatch for emergencies, the victim was unable to prevent the attack. Although she managed to trigger an emergency alert via the smartwatch, she succumbed to her injuries at the hospital.

The suspect fled the scene on a motorcycle but was apprehended by police approximately four hours later at a motel in Suwon, where he had attempted self-harm. The couple had been living separately since May, and the suspect is currently under investigation for premeditated murder.
