Gwangmyeong City achieves highest walking rate in Gyeonggi Province
Gwangmyeong City has achieved the highest walking practice rate in Gyeonggi Province, recording 67% in the 2025 Community Health Survey. This figure significantly exceeds the Gyeonggi provincial average of 50.5% and the national average of 49.2%. The walking rate is defined as the proportion of people who walk for at least 30 minutes a day, for at least 10 minutes at a time, five or more days a week.
The city has maintained high participation levels for several years, consistently ranking at the top of the province. Key drivers of this success include the ‘Walk-On’ mobile platform, which saw its user base grow fivefold from 2020 to 2025, and an increase in walking challenges. Additionally, the city has expanded physical infrastructure, including 24 barefoot walking paths and approximately 150 gardens throughout parks and residential areas.
To further encourage activity, Gwangmyeong has integrated health with environmental policies, such as linking the Walk-On platform with a carbon savings program that rewards citizens with points for walking. Mayor Park Seung-won stated the city aims to continue creating an environment where citizens can easily enjoy walking near their homes.
