Gwent Police considers zero-hours contracts amid murder surge

Gwent Police is exploring the use of zero-hours contracts for detectives to manage an unprecedented spike in murder investigations. Chief Constable Mark Hobrough reported that the force has launched 11 murder probes so far this year, a significant increase from the typical two or three investigations handled annually.

The surge has resulted in record overtime costs and required the temporary withdrawal of neighbourhood officers from community duties to support major investigation teams. To prevent officer burnout and manage costs, the force is investigating alternative staffing arrangements, including specialists who could conduct interviews or investigations outside the force's natural boundaries.

Chief Constable Hobrough stated there are no links between the 11 murders, attributing the deaths to various factors including organized crime, mental health, substance misuse, and domestic violence. Operational pressures have been further increased by national commitments and mutual aid deployments for public order policing.
