Gwent Police launch murder probe after death in Pontypool disorder

Gwent Police have launched a murder investigation following the death of 56-year-old Anthony "Tony" Jones. Mr. Jones, a resident of Brecon, died in the hospital after sustaining life-threatening injuries during an incident of violent disorder in Mill Street, Pontnewynydd, near Pontypool.

The disorder, which occurred around 7:15 PM on Thursday, August 6, involved a group of men. Authorities reported that at least three men were taken to the hospital, with two initially in critical condition. Seven men, aged 31, 39, 40, 45, 59, 61, and 73, have been arrested in connection with the incident and remain in police custody.

Detective Superintendent Laura Bartley stated, "We recognise that reports of this nature will cause concern in our community, but we have officers working around the clock conducting enquiries as part of the investigation."

Police are appealing to motorists who were traveling along Hospital Road, Mill Road, or surrounding areas between 6:00 PM and 9:00 PM on Thursday to provide dashcam footage to assist with the inquiry.
