GWM introduces new diesel engines for Tank 500 and Cannon Alpha in Australia
GWM is expanding its powertrain options in Australia by introducing a new 3.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine for the Cannon Alpha utility vehicle and the Tank 500 large SUV.
The new diesel engine produces 170kW and 620Nm of torque, paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission and a four-wheel-drive system. For the Tank 500, the diesel variant increases the braked towing capacity to 3,500kg, up from the previous 3,000kg. While the diesel engine offers less power than the hybrid version it replaces, it provides improved fuel efficiency, with the Tank 500 listed at 7.1L/100km.
The powertrain underwent over six months of local engineering and validation testing in Australia, covering durability and towing performance in various environments, including the Flinders Ranges and the Big Desert. Customer deliveries for the diesel Tank 500 are expected to begin in mid-September.
