GWW opens second climate garden in Wernigerode

The Gebäude- und Wohnungsbaugesellschaft Wernigerode mbH (GWW) has inaugurated its second ‘Klima-Garten’ (climate garden) in Wernigerode. The project, celebrated on September 3, 2026, marks the completion of a major revitalization effort for residential areas located at Hilde-Coppi-Str. 1-3 and Ernst-Pörner-Str. 1-11.

The development involved the energetic renovation of housing units, creating 90 three- and four-room apartments. A central feature of the project is the new courtyard designed as a climate garden. GWW invested 2.8 million euros in the energetic renovation and 540,000 euros in the courtyard design, which included 166,000 euros in KfW revitalization subsidies.

This initiative follows a previous successful model at Walther-Grosse-Ring, which earned GWW the German Sustainability Award in 2024. Thomas Wünsch, State Secretary for the Ministry of Science, Energy, Climate Protection and Environment of Saxony-Anhalt, attended the opening, noting that climate policy must be visible in everyday life.
