Gyeokryeolbiyeoldo concert canceled due to bad weather
A historic pop music concert scheduled to take place at Gyeokryeolbiyeoldo, often referred to as the ‘Dokdo of the West Sea,’ was canceled due to severe weather conditions. The event, featuring singer Kim Jang-hoon and the band ‘Hanguk Saram,’ was intended to commemorate ‘Dokdo Day’ and raise public awareness regarding the strategic importance of South Korea’s maritime territory.
Due to high waves and unsafe docking conditions at North Gyeokryeolbi Island, organizers decided to withdraw to ensure safety. Although the live performance could not proceed in person, the event was intended to be broadcast via YouTube to highlight the value of the islands. Kim Jang-hoon’s team plans to attempt the visit again in November.
Gyeokryeolbiyeoldo is a strategic maritime location consisting of three main islands. It serves as a base for determining South Korea’s territorial waters and Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in the central West Sea. Local authorities are currently working on a port development project at the site, which is expected to be completed by 2030 to enhance maritime security and respond to illegal fishing activities.
