South Korea GDP grows 1.0% in Q3 driven by semiconductor boom

South Korea's economy grew by 1.0% in the third quarter compared to the previous quarter, significantly exceeding the Bank of Korea's initial forecast of 0.3%. This growth was primarily driven by strong semiconductor exports and increased facility investment, which rose by 4.1%.

Real Gross Domestic Income (GDI) saw a substantial increase of 18.8% compared to the same period last year, marking its highest growth in nearly 49 years. This surge is attributed to improved terms of trade resulting from rising semiconductor prices.

Despite the robust growth in exports and investment, private consumption declined by 0.2%, marking its first decrease in 15 quarters. This decline was influenced by factors such as automotive industry strikes and stock market corrections. While the semiconductor sector remains a dominant driver of the economy, analysts have noted concerns regarding the high level of economic concentration in this single industry.
