Gyeongbuk Office of Education reorganizes middle school assignment zones
The Gyeongbuk Office of Education has announced a reorganization of middle school assignment zones across the province, effective from the 2027 school year. Following approval from the Gyeongbuk Provincial Council, the changes aim to reflect shifts in student demand caused by new school openings and consolidations.
A major component of the plan is the establishment of a new middle school school district in the Gyeongbuk Provincial Government New Town, coinciding with the opening of Homyeong Middle School in March 2025. This move is intended to stabilize student placement in the growing new town area.
Other regional adjustments include:
• Pohang: Graduates of Penta Elementary School will be eligible for priority assignment to Dongji Middle School or Dongji Girls' Middle School for the 2027 and 2028 school years. • Gyeongju: The newly established Hwacheon Elementary School will be included in the Musan school zone, with a free school district established between the Musan zone and the Gyeongju city school district. • Gumi: Yangpo Elementary School has been added to the free school district between the Okgye-Sandong school district and the Osang school zone.
Additionally, the policy expands choice for graduates of small schools, allowing them to choose between their residential school district or the district of their graduated school when applying for middle school.
