Gyeonggi cities expand suicide prevention to address economic and housing crises

Local governments in Gyeonggi Province are implementing new strategies to combat suicide by addressing underlying social and economic stressors.

Gwangmyeong City has launched an integrated task force to shift its suicide prevention paradigm from a purely mental health focus to one that proactively addresses 'life crises.' This new approach targets economic poverty, housing instability, and caregiving burdens. The initiative involves 19 municipal departments and specialized agencies working together to provide comprehensive administrative support, such as linking citizens in financial distress with welfare and job policies. Mayor Park Seung-won will personally oversee the task force as the 'Suicide Prevention Officer.'

In Hwaseong City, officials held a committee meeting to review suicide prevention projects and discuss future countermeasures. Key topics included the potential establishment of a rural-style suicide prevention center and analyzing high-frequency suicide areas to improve post-incident responses. Mayor Jeong Myeong-geun emphasized the need for a community-wide response that accounts for both social and individual factors.
