Gyeonggi Governor Choo Mi-ae shifts stance on budget and fire safety

Gyeonggi Governor Choo Mi-ae has adjusted her fiscal stance, moving from expressing concerns over interest burdens from local bond issuance to committing to mobilize all available resources, including funds and bonds, to secure essential livelihood budgets. This shift follows criticism from the Democratic Party and civic groups regarding potential budget cuts for public jobs for the severely disabled.

In a separate initiative, Choo announced the launch of a dedicated task force to develop a comprehensive plan by December to improve fire prevention systems and the working conditions of firefighters. Following a recent fatal fire in Bucheon, Choo emphasized the need for stronger national financial support for firefighting, noting that while firefighters are national employees, the financial burden remains largely with local governments.

The task force will analyze fire causes, inspect hazardous material management, and review safety protocols and field command systems. Additionally, Choo addressed regional issues including pine wilt disease control and enhanced communication with citizens through direct Q&A sessions.
