South Korean politicians face backlash over remarks on firefighter finances

Controversy has erupted in South Korea following disparaging remarks made by Gyeonggi Province Governor Chu Mi-ae and Democratic Party lawmaker Boo Seung-chan regarding firefighting budgets. During a National Assembly audit, Governor Chu described the firefighting budget as a “troublesome financial straw,” referring to the burden local governments face in funding personnel and operational costs despite firefighters being national civil servants.

The backlash intensified after Firefighter Kim Jin-seok died in the line of duty while battling a factory fire in Bucheon. Following the incident, lawmaker Boo Seung-chan further fueled the controversy by suggesting firefighting expenses were “sucking up” finances. These comments led to widespread public outcry and protests by firefighting unions, who demanded respect for the profession and better working conditions.

In response, the Democratic Party issued warnings to both Chu and Boo, calling for “heavy reflection” and promising to improve firefighter treatment. Governor Chu has since apologized for her choice of words, stating she intended to highlight the structural imbalance of financial responsibility between central and local governments rather than disparage the service.
