Gyeonggi leaders urge transport expansion for semiconductor clusters

Local government leaders and lawmakers from the southern Gyeonggi region are calling for the expansion of transportation networks to support the burgeoning semiconductor and AI industrial clusters.

Yongin Mayor Lee Sang-il has submitted a formal letter to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport requesting support for several key projects, including the new Gyeonggi Southern Regional Railway and the extension of the Gyeonggang Line. The Mayor emphasized that rapid infrastructure development is essential for the successful establishment of the semiconductor cluster and the movement of human and material resources. He noted that traffic is expected to surge significantly as semiconductor production facilities begin construction in late 2027.

Simultaneously, representatives from Hwaseong, Suwon, Yongin, and Seongnam held a press conference at the National Assembly to demand that the Gyeonggi Southern Regional Railway be included in the 5th National Railway Network Construction Plan. The proposed 50.7km line would connect Jamsil to Bongdam, passing through Pangyo, Yongin, and Gwanggyo. Local officials highlighted that a preliminary feasibility study showed a benefit-cost ratio of 1.20, asserting that the project is vital to supporting the nation’s strategic industries and serving the 4.2 million residents in the region.
