Gyeonggi Province budget deadlock threatens welfare programs
Negotiations between Gyeonggi Province and the Provincial Council regarding a supplementary budget have stalled, threatening essential welfare programs. The province initially proposed a 546.5 billion won austerity budget to address fiscal difficulties, which included cutting 3.62 billion won intended for postpartum care expenses.
The Provincial Council has demanded the restoration of funds for welfare, safety, and livelihood projects. While the council lowered its demand for budget increases from 800 billion won to approximately 300–400 billion won, an agreement has not yet been reached. This delay has caused significant concern for local municipalities, which were asked to prioritize spending their own funds before the provincial budget is finalized.
Amid public backlash and petitions calling for the governor's resignation, the province has indicated it will likely maintain the postpartum care support program. Officials stated that they have instructed municipalities to continue accepting applications for the 500,000 won per child support, anticipating a budget restoration agreement with the council.
