Gyeonggi Province climate insurance heat illness payouts surge
Gyeonggi Province reported a significant increase in payouts for heat-related illnesses through its ‘Gyeonggi Climate Insurance’ program. Between April 11 and October 21, the province paid out 220.8 million won for 1,472 heat-related illness diagnoses, representing a 2.2-fold increase in cases and a 3.3-fold increase in total amount compared to the previous year.
The surge is attributed to prolonged heatwaves and tropical nights, alongside the province increasing the diagnosis payout from 100,000 won to 150,000 won and expanding public awareness. Total insurance payouts for the period reached 752.2 million won across 25,941 cases, with the largest portion allocated to outpatient medical expenses for climate-vulnerable groups.
The program provides automatic coverage for all residents registered in Gyeonggi Province, including registered foreigners. Moving into autumn, the insurance will cover infectious diseases such as Tsutsugamushi and SFTS with 200,000 won payouts. Winter coverage will include 150,000 won for cold-related illnesses and accident consolation money for injuries resulting from heavy snow.
