Gyeonggi Province holds memorial for fallen firefighters amid budget cuts

The Gyeonggi Fire Disaster Headquarters held the 2nd Gyeonggi Fire 119 Memorial Day on the 24th to honor firefighters who died in the line of duty. Gyeonggi Province Governor Choo Mi-ae attended the ceremony, promising to improve safety measures, working conditions, and support for the bereaved families of fallen firefighters.

Compared to the inaugural event held last October, which drew approximately 5,500 participants and utilized a 100 million won provincial budget, this year's ceremony was significantly scaled back. Due to provincial budget cuts aimed at overcoming a financial crisis, the dedicated provincial budget for the event was reduced to zero. Consequently, the ceremony was conducted using approximately 7.5 million won from the Fire Disaster Headquarters' own administrative expenses.

The reduced scale resulted in a smaller gathering of about 60 people, including 14 bereaved family members, and the exclusion of public programs such as walking events and children's activities. While the event focused on memorial services and flower offerings, labor representatives emphasized that expanding such ceremonies is vital for the morale and pride of active-duty firefighters.
