Gyeonggi Province initiates Seoul Subway Line 5 extension plan

Gyeonggi Province has announced the commencement of a basic plan service for the extension of Seoul Subway Line 5, connecting Banghwa to Gimpo via Incheon's Geomdan area. The 25.8km project aims to establish 10 new stations.

However, the project faces ongoing disputes between Incheon and Gimpo regarding the number of stations in the Geomdan area. Incheon has advocated for four stations, while Gimpo has proposed only two. Concerns have been raised that because the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport delegated the basic plan establishment to Gyeonggi Province, the resulting route and station locations might favor Gimpo's interests over Incheon's.

Gyeonggi Province stated that it is acting as a delegate for the Ministry and intends to collect opinions from all relevant local governments during the planning process.
