Gyeonggi Province launches system to verify employee identity amid rising impersonation scams

Gyeonggi Province has launched a new 'Employee Authenticity Verification System' to combat rising phishing scams where criminals impersonate government officials. The service, which went live on September 21, allows users to verify whether a person claiming to be a provincial employee is actually on staff by entering their department, name, phone number, and email address.

Between last year and September of this year, there were 183 reported attempts to impersonate Gyeonggi provincial officials. Of these, 13 cases resulted in actual financial damages totaling 351.7 million won. Scammers typically use forged business cards and official-looking documents to target businesses that have previously contracted with public institutions, requesting advance payments or proxy purchases of goods.

The verification tool is accessible via the 'Organization Chart' section of the official Gyeonggi Provincial Government website. If any entered information does not match the province's personnel database, the system will alert the user that the individual is not an employee and provide contact information for the provincial call center.
