Gyeonggi Province leads South Korea in unused public Wi-Fi facilities

Data released by the National Information Society Agency (NIA) reveals that 1,643 public Wi-Fi facilities across South Korea—approximately 3.5% of the national total—have recorded zero users or data usage over the past three months.

Gyeonggi Province has the highest number of unused facilities, with 429 locations accounting for 26.1% of the nation's unused public Wi-Fi. The province also shares the highest unused rate at 4.8%, alongside Gyeongsangnam-do. Other regions with significant unused facilities include Jeonnam and Gwangju with 236 locations, Seoul with 185, and Gyeongbuk with 163.

In contrast, Daegu reported the lowest unused rate at 1.6%, with only 20 unused facilities out of 1,227. Representative Lee Ju-hee has called for stricter management of these facilities, urging the Ministry of Science and ICT and the NIA to implement rapid relocation or termination plans, particularly in regions with high rates of non-use.
