Gyeonggi Province regions face mixed results in flood and landslide recovery

Local governments in South Korea's Gyeonggi Province are managing the aftermath of last year's heavy rains, with varying results in disaster recovery and prevention efforts.

In Gapyeong County, officials report a 97% completion rate for 309 recovery projects. However, residents express significant dissatisfaction, citing incomplete works such as disconnected check dams and unreinforced riverbanks. Some areas remain vulnerable to flooding, and recent rainfall has caused secondary damage to roads and local farms. Local council members have noted that certain flood-prone areas were excluded from recovery plans, leading to continued anxiety among residents.

In contrast, Pocheon City has announced the completion of major recovery works following last year's landslides. The city is shifting its focus from simple restoration to proactive prevention. Pocheon has installed various facilities, including 10 check dams and multiple debris flow protection structures, to mitigate future risks. The city plans to expand its forest disaster prevention infrastructure through 2027 to better manage risks associated with climate change.
