Gyeonggi Province requests 244.6 billion won in additional national funds
Gyeonggi Province Governor Chu Mi-ae has requested an additional 244.6 billion won in national treasury funds to address severe regional financial difficulties. During a meeting with National Assembly Budget and Accounts Special Committee Chairman Lee Kwang-jae, Chu outlined 10 major projects requiring increased or new funding for the 2027 fiscal year.
Key requests include 20.5 billion won for labor inspector salaries, noting that labor supervision is a state-delegated task. The province also warned that without increased support, it may be forced to relinquish hosting the National Sports Festival and the National Para Games, which require approximately 50 billion won in operating costs.
Other requested funds cover childcare subsidies, regional railway construction in northern Gyeonggi, and disaster prevention. Chu also advocated for structural reforms to the tax system, citing the heavy burden on Gyeonggi Province to fund nationalized services, such as firefighting, and the province's high dependency on volatile real estate acquisition taxes.
