Gyeonggi Province selects 15 exemplary military service families
Gyeonggi Province has selected 15 families as the ‘2026 Exemplary Military Service Families’ to honor those who have fulfilled their national defense duties across multiple generations. The selection process involved reviewing 82 applicants from a pool of 2,580 military service families within the province, focusing on exceptional service such as participation in wars, special forces duty, and contributions to historical preservation.
Notable honorees include the Kim Jae-ju family, where the first generation served as a student soldier during the Korean War, the second generation served 30 years in the Marine Corps, and the third generation also volunteered for the Marines. The Lee Ju-sang family, descendants of independence activist Lee Sang-ryong, was recognized for their continued devotion, including members serving in special forces and the army during the Korean War.
Additionally, the Kim Ho-gyeong family was honored for their multi-generational service and for donating a copy of the Korean War armistice draft to the state. Gyeonggi Province plans to host an invitation event in October to present plaques of appreciation to the selected families.
