Gyeonggi Province to crack down on illegal late-night academy tutoring

The Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education has launched a high-intensity special inspection of private academies and tutoring centers ahead of the 2027 College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT). The crackdown targets illegal late-night instruction occurring after 10:00 PM.

Starting from September 9 until November 18, 25 local education support offices will conduct unannounced inspections of approximately 39,201 institutions within the province. Under local ordinances, instruction for kindergarten, elementary, middle, and high school students is restricted to the hours between 5:00 AM and 10:00 PM.

Violators face a tiered administrative penalty system: a first offense results in a corrective order, a second offense leads to suspension of instruction, and a third offense results in the cancellation of registration. The Superintendent of Education, Ahn Min-seok, ordered the strict enforcement following personal inspections that revealed academies operating late into the night, including sessions involving young elementary school students.
