Gyeonggi Province to use AI and digital twins for avian influenza prevention

Gyeonggi Province is developing a decision-support system that utilizes artificial intelligence and digital twin technology to predict and manage the spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza (AI). The project, part of a leading digital twin initiative for AI-based safety management, aims to create virtual models of real-world environments to simulate disease outbreaks.

The pilot program focuses on areas near the Namyangman migratory bird sanctuary in Hwaseong and Pyeongtaek. By integrating data such as poultry farm locations, vehicle movement, disinfection records, and migratory bird patterns, the system will allow authorities to visualize the actual quarantine environment in a virtual space.

Key features include analyzing risk changes for nearby farms based on vehicle proximity and disinfection timing. The system will also allow officials to run simulations to compare the effectiveness of different quarantine measures, such as vehicle movement restrictions or enhanced disinfection protocols, before implementing them in reality. Gyeonggi Province plans to complete the system by the end of September and conduct field testing during the winter special quarantine period. Future plans include exploring the integration of this system with the Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency to support national-level livestock quarantine decision-making.
