Gyeonggi schools promote reading culture through writing and literacy programs
Educational institutions in Gyeonggi Province are implementing various initiatives to promote reading culture and reduce smartphone dependency through the RAS (Reading, Arts, Sports) education framework.
The Dongducheon Yangju Office of Education recently held a publication ceremony for its ‘RAS Festa Book Writing Project’. The program involved 20 teachers and 20 students, including out-of-school youth, who participated in the full publishing process. Participants authored autobiographies, poetry collections, and essays, resulting in formal books with ISBN registrations. The project aims to foster self-expression and critical thinking by encouraging students to transition from readers to authors.
In a separate initiative, Yeoju Middle School organized an overnight reading event titled ‘Reading All Night’. As part of its ‘Phone-Free School’ leadership program, 58 students and 10 staff members gathered in the school library to engage with books instead of smartphones. The event included a book pop-up store, reading discussions, and film screenings based on literary works. The school intends to continue expanding its community reading culture through upcoming literary trips and discussion sessions.
