Gyeongsang National University proposes 290 billion won aerospace project

Gyeongsang National University, in collaboration with Gyeongsangnam-do, Busan, and Ulsan, has submitted a 290 billion won proposal for the government’s ‘Make 10 Seoul National Universities’ project. The plan focuses on specializing in the aerospace and defense sectors, leveraging the region's industrial strengths and proximity to major companies like Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) and Hanwha Aerospace.

If selected, the university aims to establish the Aerospace and Defense College (CSAS) and the Aerospace and Defense Convergence Research Institute (NISAS). The research institute is envisioned as a semi-independent body involving stakeholders from the Defense Acquisition Program Administration, the Korea AeroSpace Administration (KASA), and NASA.

However, the broader initiative has faced criticism regarding its implementation. While intended to reduce educational inequality and foster regional growth, the project’s shift toward a ‘selection and concentration’ model has sparked internal conflicts within regional national universities. Critics argue that the government’s emphasis on quantitative metrics, such as international journal publication counts, threatens the survival of humanities and basic sciences and pressures universities to prioritize industrial training over high-quality undergraduate education.
