Gyeongsangbuk-do begins first rice harvests of the season

The first rice harvests of the season have commenced in Gyeongsangbuk-do, South Korea. In Chilgok-gun, farmer Kim Jong-gi conducted the region's first harvest on August 14, utilizing early-maturing varieties such as Hwanggeum-byeo, Koshihikari, and Yundam. Kim, who manages 40 hectares, expects to receive prices approximately 10% higher than market averages due to the high quality and eco-friendly cultivation methods used for his ‘Geumjong Rice’ brand.

Simultaneously, in Yeongju-si, the city and Anjeong Nonghyup held a ceremony for the first harvest of ‘8.15 Liberation Rice’ in Anjeong-myeon. This specific variety, known as ‘Barmi’, is an extremely early-maturing type that reached fruition 109 days after planting. The city aims to harvest a total of 120 tons by the end of the month, with the new rice being packaged in 4kg and 5kg units for distribution ahead of the Chuseok holiday.
