Gyeongsangbuk-do inspects 21 coastal pedestrian bridges

Gyeongsangbuk-do province has launched a safety inspection of 21 maritime pedestrian bridges across five coastal cities and counties: Pohang, Gyeongju, Yeongdeok, Uljin, and Ulleung. The initiative, running from September 7 to 18, follows the collapse of the Boritdol Bridge in Pohang on July 28, where an 80-meter section of the pier and deck gave way.

The inspections will focus on facilities that fall outside the scope of mandatory regular inspections under the ‘Special Act on the Safety and Maintenance of Facilities’. By targeting these gaps in management, authorities aim to identify structural damage, such as cracks, peeling, or spalling, as well as corrosion caused by constant exposure to sea salt and wind.

Experts will also evaluate auxiliary facilities, including railings and safety fences, to ensure they are properly fixed and undamaged. If hazards are identified, the province plans to implement immediate safety measures and necessary repairs to prevent future accidents and ensure the safety of residents and tourists.
